How prevalent are holiday drunk driving accidents?

With the upcoming holidays, residents in Arizona and elsewhere are probably planning and preparing for family gatherings and holiday events. While this is a joyous time, it is also a time when motorists need to be more cautious. While residents and visitors in Arizona are not concerned with inclement winter weather, they should be weary of drunk driving on the roadways during the holidays.

How prevalent are holiday drunk driving accidents? Based on a 10-year study conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, of all traffic fatalities, roughly 39 percent were alcohol related. This study did not only focus on the winter holiday, but rather focused on holidays occurring throughout the year. Nonetheless, the deadliest holiday of the year happens to be during the winter - New Years Day.

While drunk driving was listed as the most common cause of fatal holiday crashes, there was another factor that contributed to a large number of these crashes. Roughly 30 percent of the traffic fatalities involved a speeding driver. And while a drunk driver is a dangerous factor on the roadway, this study signifies that speeding drivers are just as dangerous.

Although many equate holiday accidents with drunk drivers, it is important to understand that there are other factors, which are just as dangerous, causing hazards on the roads. Those harmed by a drunk driver should understand that there are recourses available. Losing a loved one in a fatal accident is a difficult event, but it is very tragic and traumatic to lose a family member during the holidays. While a wrongful death suit cannot replace a loved one, it could help family members recover compensation for their losses and damages.
