Arizona is the strictest state when it comes to DUI cases

In a perfect world, car accidents would never happen and everyone would obey and observe existing laws. However, reality is very different. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in 2012 alone nearly 31 percent of deaths in car accident on the U.S. highways occurred because someone was operating their vehicle while driving intoxicated.

The Centers for Disease Control similarly corroborated this statistic by noting that drunk driving accidents result in the deaths of over 10,000 people annually. The U.S. government estimates the annual economic losses and cost due to DUI accidents to be about $60 billion.

When it comes to drunk driving accidents, some people may wonder as to why they occur so frequently when DUI laws are in place. The answer is multifaceted and lies in how existing DUI laws are enforced, what penalties and fines are imposed on DUI offenders and how severe the consequences are for a DUI driver who causes an accident. In fact, in a recent study conducted by the financial website WalletHub, which examined both the most lenient and strictest states on DUI enforcement in the U.S., Arizona was found to be the strictest in the nation.

It is great that Arizona is tough on DUI offenders, but despite the disincentive of the large fines, the required alcohol assessment and automatic impound of the car of DUI suspects, drunk driving accidents routinely occur, leaving people maimed, causing life-changing injuries and even killing unsuspecting drivers and passengers every day. A drunk driver who causes an accident may face criminal charges, but that may not be enough for the victims of the DUI accident who have suffered life changing injuries and incurred large medical cost. These victims may only find justice by holding the drunk driver who caused the accident civilly liable for their pain and suffering.
