What is a chemical burn?

A burn is classified as a chemical burn when a corrosive or irritating material such as an acid or base comes in contact with a person's skin or eyes. Even though skin serves as a barrier to protect internal organs from the outside world, a chemical exposure may result in a reaction which penetrates the skin and affects not only the skin but also other organs in the body.

Chemical burns can occur in any setting in Arizona such as a home, workplace or school and can be caused by common household products. Some common products which can result in a burn injury include household bleach, acid contained in a motorcycle or car battery, various cleaning products and even products used to whiten teeth and sanitize dentures.

The severity of a burn injury caused by a chemical depends on several factors, such as how long a person was in contact with the corrosive chemical, the location on the body where the burn occured, the amount of the chemical and the concentration and strength of the chemical. Generally, the symptoms of a chemical burn include redness of the skin, burning in the area, skin irritation, pain and even blackened dead skin.

When a medical professional is diagnosing and classifying a chemical burn injury, they look at how deep the skin was impacted by the chemical. A first-degree chemical burn is only superficial and affects only the top layer of skin. When the second layer of skin is affected, it is classified as a second-degree burn. Finally, when the third layer of skin is penetrated, it is classified as a third-degree burn.

Chemical burn injuries can lead to disfigurement and have the potential to cause a lot of pain and suffering. For anyone who has suffered a chemical burn injury due to the negligence of another, they may find it helpful to talk with a personal injury attorney for information.
