Drunk driver kills two, injures one and paralyzes a child

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, the average person has a 30 percent chance of either being injured or killed by a drunk driver. In fact, according to statistics, in 2003 nearly 42 percent of all traffic deaths were alcohol related. Sadly, drunk driving accidents are still a leading cause of death. Clearly, driving drunk is a public safety issue which can result not only in death, but also catastrophic injuries for those involved.

Under current Arizona DUI laws, a motorist is considered to be driving under influence if their blood alcohol content is greater than 0.08 percent. Arizona residents may have heard that recently in Phoenix a head-on collision between two vehicles resulted in the paralysis of a 4-year-old, injuries to one other occupant in the car and tragically the death of the 4-year-old's parents. Preliminary investigations by law enforcement indicate that an impaired or drunk driver was at fault.

Police reports indicate that a drunk driver crossed a center line and collided head-on into the vehicle with a couple, their 4-year-old daughter and one other family member. The 4-year-old's parents were 27 and 28 years of age. Reports indicate that the drunk driver's blood alcohol content was 0.24 - three times the legal limit of 0.08.

The family members of the victims are likely devastated. It is difficult, if not impossible, to imagine the pain and sorrow the family members of the victims are going through. In the blink of an eye, the lives of all those who are impacted by such an accident can change. Coping with loss is different for each person, but in some cases holding the negligent party responsible for their actions may help family members heal. A bereaved family may be entitled to funeral and burial cost, compensation for the long-term care of a surviving member, pain and suffering and medical expenses.
