Are dogs required to be on a leash in Arizona?

Dog owners in the State of Arizona will find it helpful to learn that under current Arizona animal control laws dogs are not permitted to roam at large. Dog owners have a responsibility to ensure that their dogs are secured and confined on their property. Additionally, when a dog is not on its owner's property, it must be on a leash and under the control of the owner at all times. The leash should not be greater than six feet long.

Furthermore, any dog that is older than three months is required to have a collar around its neck. Along with the collar there must a valid dog license attached. Exceptions to the collar and license tag requirement may apply to dogs that are being trained, for instance at a kennel club.

After a dog owner pays the appropriate license fee in the county the owner resides in, a dog tag is issued by that county. Once a dog tag is issued, it has the license number, county name and expiration date of the license. After issuance the dog tag must be attached to a collar or harness and must be worn by the dog at all times.

If a dog owner is not in compliance with current animal control laws and requirements they may face a Class 2 misdemeanor charge. It is very important for dog owners to ensure that their dogs have the necessary and appropriate dog tags.

Finally, though Arizona requires dogs to be a leash there may be times when a dog may get loose and pose a public safety risk. Anyone who has questions about animal control laws or has been bitten by a dog under or other domestic animal may find it helpful to contact a personal injury law firm that deals with animal bites.
