Many injured, four killed in multi-vehicle accident at AZ border

Semi-trucks are an intregral part of the transportation of goods, and many people routinely drive beside them as they carry various loads. However, truck accidents can result in very serious injuries and even deaths to those who must share the roadways with big rigs.

Arizona residents may find it interesting that according to a report by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, accidents involving large trucks resulted in nearly 4,000 fatalities and over 85,000 injuries in 2011 alone. Given that a loaded semi-truck weighs over 25 times more than a car, the damage to a car and its occupants in a collision with a truck can be devastating to the car. In fact, a recent accident left four people dead and over 20 injured when a semi-truck hauling steel pipes jackknifed.

The tragic multi-vehicle accident occurred at the Arizona border on eastbound Interstate 10 in the early morning hours of May 21. According to authorities, the big rig attempted to overtake a slow moving car, and in the process, its wheels jammed into the dirt causing it to jackknife into a median. The steel pipes the semi-truck was transporting fell into both the west and eastbound lanes, causing a bus with over 30 passengers to overturn. It is believed that the truck collided with several vehicles.

Sadly, all four individuals who lost their lives were passengers on the bus. Seventeen other people involved in the multi-vehicle accident sustained moderate to minor injuries and were transported to various hospitals for medical attention.

Multi-vehicle accidents can happen anytime, anywhere and to anyone. Accidents involving a number of vehicles can get complex. Those who have been injured or those who have lost a loved one in such accidents may not know where to begin, who to contact for information and what steps to take. During such confusing and difficult times, contacting a law office with expertise in truck and car accidents may be helpful.
