Car accident injures couple

Most drivers at some level are familiar with the term distracted driving. For many, the term elicits images of motorists behind the wheel talking on their cell phones or texting. However, our Arizona residents will find it interesting to learn that according to the National Highway Safety Transportation Administration, distracted driving is not limited to using a cell phone, but is any activity which diverts the driver's attention from the primary task of driving.

According to the NHSTA in 2011 over 400,000 people suffered an injury due to the negligence of a distracted driver. In fact, recently a Florence, AZ couple was injured when the car they were in was "T-boned" by another vehicle on Arizona 287. According to Florence police, the women in the other vehicle who collided with the couple's car indicated that she was distracted by her purse falling inside her car and did not realize or see the couple's car in front of her.

Police at the scene of the accident reportedly had to extract the couple from their vehicle before transporting them via air to Maricopa Medical Center. The couple is reported to be in stable condition. The accident is still under investigation and presently no citations have been issued.

Car accidents can be a life-altering event for all those involved, particularly for those who have sustained injuries. Even though the reasons for car accidents vary, distracted driving is preventable. When a driver takes to the road, he or she is required to follow all traffic laws in place. When failure to follow traffic laws harms another driver, the victim may hold the negligent driver liable.

For anyone involved in a car accident, first and foremost is it important to attend to one's medical needs. However, it may be helpful to contact a personal injury lawyer to discuss legal options and ensure one's rights are protected.
