Police seeking truck driver after fatal crash in Phoenix

A recent chain-reaction auto accident in Phoenix serves as a reminder of how dangerous a truck's unsecured payload can be. A motorcyclist was killed, and others suffered injuries in a fiery accident on Interstate 17.

A flatbed truck was transporting several gas cylinders, which police say fell off the back of the truck. An SUV following the truck braked to avoid hitting the cylinders. A motorcyclist then abruptly stopped to avoid hitting the SUV, and the 27-year-old rider was struck by a semi-truck that was following him.

According to witnesses, there were four explosions before fire and smoke erupted from the crash. Police were unsure of whether the explosions were from the gas cylinders or the gas tanks of the vehicles involved.

The motorcyclist was rushed from the scene with critical burn injuries, in addition to the traumatic injuries from being hit by the truck. Sadly, the young man died at the hospital.

The semi-truck driver was reportedly not injured, but two members of the family traveling in the SUV were treated at a hospital. Their injuries were said to be minor.

Officers reported that the flatbed truck driver may not have known that the cylinders fell from the vehicle. The flatbed driver was not present at the scene of the accident, and the death of the motorcyclist is being handled as a homicide, according to police officers investigating the crash.

For families of the victims of fatal truck accidents, the related monetary expenses can be overwhelming in a time already fraught with grief. While no legal action can bring back a deceased loved one, it may be possible to seek compensation to cover some of the financial burdens caused by another party's negligence.
