Drivers know risks of speeding, do it anyway

Last week on our blog we discussed the dangers of texting while driving. This week we will discuss another dangerous driving behavior that has been around much longer than using a cellphone behind the wheel. The dangerous behavior that is common among many drivers is speeding.

A new survey from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found that speeding is very prevalent in the United States despite drivers knowing the risks. The survey found that almost 50 percent of drivers said that speeding is dangerous and a problem in the U.S. However, one in five surveyed still admitted to speeding.

A majority of drivers said that speeding increases the risk of a car accident, and 91 percent of those surveyed said that obeying the speed limit is important. However, more than 25 percent also said that they speed without realizing it or because they like to drive fast. In addition, 16 percent said speeding is not risky for skilled drivers.

The survey reported some disturbing findings. It seems that a majority of drivers understand the dangers of speeding, but many still admit to driving over the speed limit. In addition, some drivers think it's okay for skilled drivers to drive as fast as they want regardless of the dangers they pose to other drivers and themselves.

Speeding contributes to many traffic fatalities every year in the U.S. The NHTSA reports that speeding causes roughly 10,000 fatalities every year. The dangers of speeding are well-known and increase the risk of being in a serious or fatal car accident.

Drivers need to be aware of the dangers of speeding and make sure they educate themselves and new drivers about the dangers to prevent accidents in the future.
